The history of Lomi Lomi

Lomi Lomi originated in Hawaii, where families routinely massaged each other to maintain good health, a strong body and a balance of body, mind and spirit. Receiving Lomi Lomi on a regular basis kept one connected to spirit (mana) and open-heartedness (aloha). The harmony of all energies maintained a strong constitution and prevented illness. This is in stark contrast to our western society today, where some parents don’t tend to touch their children in a healing, sensual and loving way. In fact, touch has become taboo in many ways. Our experience has shown that many people who are drawn to learn Lomi Lomi do so specifically to massage and heal their family and extended loved ones.

In the last 10 years this ancient healing modality has reached many shores outside of Polynesia and is respected as a sacred gift by those who teach and practice it.

Therapists are drawn to the sensual/loving and therapeutic aspects of this work as it allows for a deeper sacred bond with the client, which allows for mutual trust and authentic healing of the mind, body and spirit. This sacred bond allows the massage therapist to feel what the client is feeling, which is the difference between a relaxing treatment and a transformational one – with long lasting results. It puts you in touch on a deep kinesthetic level and allows you to communicate with the body, restoring what needs to be restored and releasing what needs to be released. The differences between Lomi Lomi and regular massage

What is the difference between Lomi Lomi and regular massage (we assume that regular massage includes healing massage, Swedish massage, sports massage and deep tissue massage)? Like other types of massage, it is done with oil and on a massage table.

However, the difference begins with the connection that is made between the practitioner and the client. The practitioner opens to universal energy/love and tunes in to the client’s body, energy and emotional needs. This creates a safe environment which the client immediately feels and begins to let go. In Lomi Lomi, the practitioner works with their hands as an instrument of their heart and therefore massages with an open heart.

The process of Lomi Lomi

Most of the client’s body is exposed, but a sarong is used to maintain modesty. This allows for uninterrupted, long flowing strokes in a continuous dance-like motion over the entire body.

The breath is used to maintain focus and energy flow. Through these flowing movements, the practitioner gradually dissolves layers of stored tension and emotional memory. This allows any blockages to be released and mana (life force energy) to vibrate throughout the entire being. As a side effect, the heart surrenders and opens, and a sense of connection to everyone and everything is often experienced.

The other secret of this bodywork is that the whole body is massaged. It is a holistic treatment, so when you massage the neck, the energy moves to the shoulders and so on. In other words, the back, front, face, arms and feet all receive healing. This is always explained to the client before they get on the table.

There are different types of massage offered by individuals and clinics around the world. Experiencing them would help you discover which type works best for your individual body.

In this article, we will discuss 10 of the most popular types of massage performed by therapists and their unique benefits.

 

What is massage therapy?

 

Provided by a registered massage therapist, massage therapy is a hands-on technique that involves therapeutic kneading, manipulation and movement of muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The massage therapist applies varying degrees of pressure with his or her hands to improve blood flow and tension in the soft tissues involved, helping to reduce muscular tension as well as facilitating relaxation of the nervous system for an overall mental and physical relaxation experience.

Certain types of massage that have a more therapeutic purpose are more likely to be performed by an RMT (Registered Massage Therapist), such as sports massage, prenatal massage and deep tissue massage.

Other massages, which typically have a more relaxing purpose in a spa setting, are performed by those who are not registered. However, this is a generalisation and there are certainly exceptions.

Deep Tissue Massage:

Deep tissue massages are meant to be deep and intense. They are used when you have old chronic muscle tension and pain, or simply when you enjoy and respond well to a deep tissue massage.

This technique is used to break up scar tissue and muscle adhesions. Deep tissue massage helps to pinpoint specific areas and uses broader strokes to target deeper muscles and tissues.

Based on our clinical experience, deep tissue massage is not for everyone. Avoid if you have sensitive joints, inflammation or autoimmune conditions as the pressure can aggravate some conditions.

Sports massage:

Sports massages are designed to treat and assess specific sports-related injuries. These types of massages are more likely to be performed by registered massage therapists with an orthopaedic approach or those who have a passion for sports massage.

As an athlete, it’s important to treat your injuries as they happen and not “wait for them to go away”. Sports massage can both speed up your healing and prevent your injury from becoming chronic and affecting your performance.

Prenatal massage:

A prenatal massage is like a regular massage, but with certain restrictions and techniques. Pregnant women often experience swollen hands and feet, joint pain, nerve pain and general tension as the body goes through hormonal changes.

An experienced therapist will be aware of these factors and will tailor the massage to the individual needs of the pregnant woman. In addition, equipment such as a pregnancy pillow and a special treatment table will make the massage experience much more comfortable if you request a prenatal massage.

In addition to massage therapy, chiropractic care during pregnancy would also benefit both mother and baby.

Swedish massage:

If you have had a massage before, you have probably experienced the Swedish massage technique. This technique involves using a sliding lotion or massage oil with broad strokes to improve circulation and work out any tension in the body.

Swedish massage is often used as an introduction or for general relaxation.

Thai massage:

A Thai massage is for those looking for a more active form of massage. Thai massage is beneficial for improving flexibility, circulation and energy levels as the practitioner uses a series of body movements to stretch and twist in different positions.

Reflexology:

Reflexology is the use of firm and specific pressure on the hands, feet and ears. It is believed and researched that certain points on our hands, feet and ears correlate with various functions of our body, particularly our visceral organs.

Reflexology is an alternative treatment that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet.
Studies have shown reflexology to be particularly beneficial for anxiety, reducing fatigue and improving sleep quality.

Hot Stone Massage:

Certainly more of a spa massage experience, body workers can use correctly set temperature stones to help loosen tissues and be able to apply firmer pressure with less discomfort.

This massage is often used in conjunction with a manual massage and is not usually used on its own.

Trigger point massage:

This massage technique involves more targeted and deeper pressure on specific points on the body that happen to hold extra tension, or what some refer to as “muscle knots”.

A muscle knot is a painful or tender spot in a muscle. It feels tight and sore and is often found in the upper back or legs. They’re not usually harmful, but they can be uncomfortable. In rare cases, muscle knots are a sign of long-term (or chronic) pain.

Knots can prevent proper circulation and cause pain and discomfort either when moving a particular muscle or sometimes even when standing still.

Trigger point massage involves less broad strokes and more sustained deep pressure on painful areas until the practitioner feels the muscle knot release under the hands.

The practitioner will usually hold the pressure for up to 30 seconds, or until the patient indicates that the pain has decreased on the pressure scale, and then repeat until the tissue has completely released.

Shiatsu massage:

Dating back hundreds of years, the Chinese combined this type of massage with other healing techniques such as acupuncture and cupping to relieve pain.

Shiatsu massage is based on a psychosocial model that includes emotional, physiological and spiritual well-being. It may combine the use of feet and stretches similar to yoga for pain relief.

Aromatherapy massage:

Any type of massage described above can include aromatherapy, which is the use of pure essential oils on the body that serve different purposes on the nervous system.

Aromatherapy consists of using essential oils and the art of massage therapy as a treatment.

Some essential oils have calming and anxiety-reducing effects, such as lavender, vetiver and neroli. Others can help with sore muscles, such as peppermint and pine.

Aromatherapy massage is a way to enhance your massage experience by adding the aspect of scent and the benefits of pure essential oils.

Medical massage:

A medical massage is a result-oriented massage. It is the most common type given by RMTs as it involves an assessment and clinical evaluation of a specific condition.

This massage is best suited for those who have a specific medical condition or sports injury and are seeking professional help to treat their condition. This massage is less relaxing and more therapeutic.

Couples massage:

A couple’s massage can involve any of the massage techniques described above, but both partners are present at the same time and each has their own practitioner working on them.

This type of massage can encourage a romantic bond between two partners and help them to relax and take their minds off everyday problems.

Couples massages are mostly offered in spas or relaxation-type facilities and are rarely performed by a registered massage therapist.

Lymphatic massage:

Myofascial Lymphatic Drainage, also known as MLD, is a specific massage technique that focuses on the lymphatic vessels that carry toxins that can build up in the body from a cold or an inflammatory episode.

MLD is used to stimulate the movement of lymphatic fluid in the body, helping to remove excess fluid from an area that may be swollen or at risk of infection. This massage involves gently applying pressure to the lymph nodes and staying on the surface for manual drainage.

Lymph is the watery fluid that flows through your lymphatic system. Lymph (pronounced “limf”) helps your lymphatic system support your overall health, from providing nutrients to cells and tissues to protecting your body from foreign invaders such as viruses, bacteria and cancer cells.

MLD massages are excellent for improving the flow of lymph, which can become constricted and blocked as a result of a strong immune response, for example after a bad bout of flu, or an injury such as bursitis or sprained ankle.
